Phoenix Civic Plaza

The history of Phoenix Civic Plaza runs parallel to the amazing growth of downtown Phoenix itself. For over 40 years, Phoenix Civic Plaza has served to welcome out of state visitors to the Copper Square, the greater metropolitan Phoenix area, and the state of Arizona.

As late as 1963, there were no large structures in Downtown Phoenix for the purpose of conventions, theatrical productions, or any even requiring a sufficiently large structure. Instead, high school auditoriums were used. This made it difficult to attract touring theatrical events, and impossible to conduct trade shows or conventions. That year a group of citizens formed the Phoenix Civic Plaza Building Corporation to address the situation.

Between 1969 and 1972, Phoenix Civic Plaza was constructed. It provided the city of Phoenix with a space for theatrical productions, Phoenix Symphony Hall, Symphony Hall Terrace, and the Convention Center, all standing on 16.5 acres of land.

The original desire to redefine Phoenix as a premier host for conventions proved successful. So much so that Phoenix Civic Plaza would be expanded in 1978 to accommodate the demand for convention space. When the refurbished Phoenix Civic Plaza was available for bookings seven years later, nearly 300,000 square feet of exhibitor space was available.

The latest update to Phoenix Civic Plaza, to be completed in 2008, will increase the convention space to 900,000 square feet of rentable space. The modern facility, agreeable business climate of Phoenix and the massive show floor will make the Phoenix Convention Center highly competitive as a host for trade shows. The Phoenix Civic Plaza name, however, will be retired in favor of the name, Phoenix Convention Center.
